Alcohol and STDs

Get the Facts on

Drinking can give you more than a headache the next day — alcohol, unprotected sex, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) go together. Alcohol makes sex riskier. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, so once you start drinking, you're less fussy about who you are with and what you do together (ever heard of "beer goggles"?).

Alcohol use can:

  • Make talking and listening more difficult: "Did she say she had genital warts (HPV) or was brilliant at sports?"
  • Inhibit clear thinking and decision making: "Just this one time without a condom won't count" (everytime counts)
Almost 50% of unplanned sex is under the influence of alcohol while 60% of STDs are transmitted when the partners have been drinking. The best way to avoid becoming the next STD statistic is to moderate your use of alcohol — and never mix more than two drinks and sex.
