Symptoms & Effects
Hep B is carried in the blood stream and attacks the liver. Once you're exposed, it can take 6 weeks to 6 months before you have symptoms. Some people never have symptoms, but still have the disease and can pass it on to other partners.

Symptoms include loss of appetite, extreme tiredness, pains in muscles and joints, nausea, darkened urine, yellowing of the skin and eyes and rashes.

Screening & Treatment
If you think you have been with someone who has Hep B, go get a blood test right away. If you do get Hepatitis B, there is a treatment that can decrease the infection. The treatment works best when it's given as soon as possible, but within two weeks after you've been exposed.

Protection
You can really do something right now --- there is a Hepatitis B vaccine that protects 85-95% of people who use it from ever getting this virus. You get three shots over six months and it lasts for at least 15 years. It's available lots of places, including your doctor, a community clinic or Planned Parenthood.
